The Truth About Typo Domain Parking

A popular way to make some extra money online is by parking domains. The goal: find domain names that either get type in traffic or are listed well in search engines. In this article we will discuss typo (or misspelled) domains specifically.

Many successful domainers consider  parking revenue as a real life money  machine, but how realistically can these methods be  duplicated?

How much traffic does a typo domain generate?

Each domain and typo variation is different and this is what makes hunting for the best typos an art in itself.  My estimate would be that 95% of all typos get less than 10 visitors per day, most seeing only 1-2 visits if that. If you were to purchase a domain for $7.67 at Godaddy’s discounted rate, then your typo domain would need to make 2.1 cents per day to pay for itself and the remaining income would be profit.

Given average click through rates and price per click of popular parking companies, most owners will need to have thousands of typo names to make a good profit, much less full time income parking typo domains.

I’ve recently come across many forums that are discussing typo traffic and new domainers looking to get into parking and the truth is that you’re going to find a few great typos, maybe 30-60% of them will profit and that will only be a few dollars at best.  If you research well every site you buy should make something over the course of a year, but again can your site average 3 cents per day all year?

Buying expiring domains with an online  history and backlinks are a much better parking option. Typo domains are almost useless, except for their type in traffic. You could however develop a future website on a newly expired domain and make more with some effort.

I’ve seen many typo domains get 100+ visitors per day and if you can find enough of these limited domains, there’s profit to be had. Best these are extremely rare in 2009. Even most single  mistake typo’s will not cover the cost of registration. For each website visitors have a few common ways they mistype the domain and then many variations that get some traffic here and there. Most decent typo’s available today have been tested and dropped numerous times.

I’m not saying money can’t be made parking domains or even parking typo domains, but I can say that most new to domain parking will loose money in the early years of the typo  game. Be prepared to spend many thousand dollars to make a few hundrend per month.

Best of Luck

If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
